The Wheatland family

The Wheatlands are family on my maternal side and their roots are in the county of Sussex in southern England. Going further back the Wheatlands have married in to many other families, including the Moores of Northern Ireland, and the Tullets, Floats and Palmers from Sussex. Many of the Wheatland men were adventurers who served in the Royal Navy, but they were invariably poor with roots in the fields.

For details of my ancestors, see the family tree and click on the ancestors.

  • Olive Mary Wheatland and Ernest Moore – my grandparents.
    • Olive came from Croydon but Ernest was from Northern Ireland and served in the Irish Guards in the Second World War.
  • William Wheatland and Elizabeth Marlow – my great-grandparents.
    • William served in the Royal Navy during the First World War.
  • John Wheatland and Mary Coughlan – my 2nd great-grandparents.
    • Five of the couple’s children served in the Royal Navy, earning them praise in national newspapers.
  • William Wheatland and Olive Tullett – my 3rd great-grandparents.
    • William moved his family from Sussex to Croydon in Surrey.
  • James Wheatland and Ann Float – my 4th great-grandparents.
    • James was one of many agricultural labourers who worked the Sussex fields in the Wheatland family.
  • Richard Wheatland and Mary Stenning – my 5th great-grandparents.
    • Richard and Mary were often described as paupers, making them reliant on their parish in Sussex.
  • John Wheatland and Mary Golds – my 6th great-grandparents.
    • I’ve yet to pin down the baptism records of both John and Mary.
