John Tullett (1744-1811) and Sarah Charlwood (1748-1834)

John Tullett (1744-1811) and Sarah Charlwood (1748-1834).
My 5th great-grandparents.

John Tullett was baptised at St Peter’s Church in Newdigate, Surrey, on 30 September 1744 to parents William Tullett and Elizabeth Wolf.

He married Sarah Charlwood in Newdigate on 31 October 1769. Sarah was the daughter of John Charlwood and his wife Elizabeth, who were Quakers and buried at the society’s burial ground at Ifield in Sussex. Sarah wasn’t baptised by a Church of England curate until 4 December 1830 – at St Peter’s in Newdigate. The record noted that she was aged, was Sarah Tullett by marriage and the daughter of John and Elizabeth Charlwood. It also said she was born in February 1748.

John and Sarah had a large family and remained in Newdigate for the rest of their lives. A Land Tax record from 1784 showed John occupying land belonging to a Stephen Burberry in the parish.

John is more than likely the John Tullett Snr of Newdigate appointed as executor to John Wolf or Woolf, also of Newdigate, who wrote his will on 31 May 1796 and died that same year. A widower, Wolf left some of his household goods to his Tullett cousin.

He died late in 1811 and was buried at St Peter’s on 1 January 1812. Sarah died in 1834 and was buried there on 25 November.

Their children were:

  • Mary Tullett (1770-????), my 4th great-grand aunt. Mary was baptised on 16 March 1770 at St Peter’s in Newdigate, Surrey. She, a spinster, married widower Thomas Bishop at St Peter’s on 29 October 1799, but I’ve not been able to trace them further. They had a daugther:
    • Jenny Bishop (1800-????).
  • John Tullett (1772-1849), my 4th great-grand uncle. John was baptised on 30 May 1772 at St Peter’s in Newdigate, Surrey. He married Elizabeth Weller there on 19 October 1797. She came from the village and was baptised at St Peter’s on 23 August 1772. The couple lived in Rusper, Sussex, and the 1841 census showed them living in Ifield Lane, with John described as an agricultural labourer. He died in 1849 and was buried in Rusper on 6 May. Elizabeth continued to live in Ifield Lane with her son Michael, according to the 1851 census, and died in 1855. She was buried on 25 June. Their children were:
    • James Tullett (1800-????). He was baptised at St Peter’s in Newdigate, Surrey.
    • Michael Tullett (1802-????). He was baptised in Rusper, Sussex, and may have been twins with Thomas (below). He was unmarried and at home with his parents in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, working as an agricultural labourer. It’s possible that he married widow Susan Cook in Camberwell, now in South London, in 1855 and died there in 1860. The marriage certificate lists both him and his father as farmers, which is probably an exaggeration.
    • Thomas Tullett (1802-1842) was baptised on the same day as his brother Michael in Rusper, Sussex, so may have been a twin. He married Louise Napper in the village in 1829, worked as an agricultural labourer and had at least one son. Louise died in 1849.
    • Peter Tullett (1803-1843) was baptised and buried in Rusper in Sussex.
    • Jesse Tullett (1807-1830) was baptised and buried in Rusper in Sussex.
    • Eliza Tullett (1808-1809).
    • Charlotte Tullett (1810-????) was baptised in Rusper, Sussex, and may have married Eli Chandler in 1826.
    • William Tullett (1811-1814) was baptised and buried in Rusper in Sussex.
  • Sarah Tullett (1778-????), my 4th great-grand aunt. Mary was baptised on 20 December 1778 at St Peter’s in Newdigate, Surrey. Another girl by this name was baptised in 1773 to Richard Tullett making it difficult to accurately trace Sarah.
  • Jenny or Jane Tullett (1781-1783), my 4th great-grand aunt. She was baptised on 4 March 1781 at St Peter’s in Newdigate, Surrey, and was buried there on 24 October 1783 as the “daughter of John”. Her name varies, doubtless the result of error or mistranscription by clerks.
  • Daniel Tullett (1785-1861), my 4th great-grandfather. He moved his family from Newdigate to Rusper in Sussex.
  • Amy Tullett (1787-????), my 4th great-grand aunt. Amy was born on 30 April 1787 and baptised on 27 May at St Peter’s in Newdigate, Surrey. She may be the woman who married a William Wood in Warnham, Sussex, in 1818 but I have no proof.
  • Hester or Esther Tullett (1796-1876), my 4th great-grand aunt. Hester was baptised on 21 February 1796 at St Peter’s in Newdigate, Surrey, and balance of probability suggests she married John Tilly at St Martin’s in Dorking, Surrey, on 26 April 1835. By 1841, however, she was working as a servant for a farmer in Newdigate and there’s no mention of John, which suggests he died. No records have been found to prove it. By 1851 she was working as a housekeeper for farmer Henry Holcomb in Holmwood near Dorking but is missing from the 1861 census. In 1871 she was living in Broad Lane in Newdigate as a servant. She died in the village in 1876 and was buried on 5 November.
